Re: Welcome happychem!!!
Thanks guys!
It's good to be back in the hobby, albeit just slowly. I was away for training until the summer of 08 and sailing much of the time (go navy!) since I've returned to Halifax. It's been excellent for my career and I've experienced many great things and visited many foreign ports. Unfortunately there's been no time for aquariums so they've sat empty until now.
I'm restarting my 33 gallon in a lower light setup than before. It has to be something simple enough for my wife to care for (she's not nearly as crazy as I am when it comes to planted tanks ) when I'm away. I started Sunday with an inventory of everything and got all the kit laid out Monday. I filled the bare tank and ran function tests on filters and powerheads Tuesday and poured a load of bleach into the tank Tuesday afternoon - I thought I spotted some mold in the cannister filter and didn't want to take any chances with gear that had been sitting in musty and damp storage for a year and change. Unfortunately, the bleach had some detergent or surfactant in it and foaming occurred. I did 3 100% (well 99%) water changes last night (love the Python!) and added a load of charcoal to the filter. The water was free of foam, but I let it run overnight with the charcoal and did one more 99% water change this morning and threw out the charcoal. From there it was standard/exciting setup.
Substrate will be #2 silica (dirt cheap, but suits a basic low-tech planted tank nicely), 60 w light, heavily planted. I'll start agonizing over the aquascape soon, I've made my list of plants and will begin acquiring tomorrow. Once I've seen what I can get from the list, then I'll worry about layout.
For critters I'm thinking khuli loaches for lower strata and either white clouds or rummy nosed tetras for mid strata. I haven't decided on what else yet, there are a few interesting types, but I just haven't found the "centrepiece" fish yet.

Hello happychem,
Glad you found us, I started fish keeping (again) after my sailing days too. I bet the MTS will kick in when you get a shore posting.

Glad to have you back in the hobby. :D
I can't wait to see some pictures once everything is set-up and running.
