Re: Welcome SKACMAN!!!!
Hello all,
Well my name is Scott, I started with aquatics when I decided to clean up a natural pond that was in front of my house. Got it clean put a few goldfish in there and hey thrived, moved on to my real passion Koi fish. I bought 6 large Koi which had babies over the summer, I was able to net a few and I have them in a aquarium next to me. So I am fairly new to aquariums and look forward to your guys help and input. I just recently purchased a 125 gallon tank and it has been keeping me busy ever since. I found out about this site from a nice guy who bought a cichild fish from me, that came with the aquarium.
I have all kinds of pictures I would love to share, it is easier if you just got to my website http://skacman.com/ and go under "Koi Fish" I just started the site, so I only have my experiences of cleaning my pond posted for now.
Here is a picture of the fish my girlfreind and I bought last week for the tank:

Re: Welcome SKACMAN!!!!
Thanks guys I appreciate it, I do have a few questions, some I figured out on my own by trial and error lol My main concern right now is a small Koi I have, we bought it with a damaged tail and I been doing some of the suggested things on google. I will post some pics in the hospital forum tomorrow and see if you guys/gals think the tail is healing properly.
Re: Welcome SKACMAN!!!!
Good to have you on the forum Scott :D
I know Graham is also a big Koi enthusiast so you will be in good company here. He'd probably also be able to help you out with any questions you have that are specific to that variety of fish.

Re: Welcome SKACMAN!!!!
Thanks, I will probably have to seek Graham out, I believe he also has a Koi pond as well. Pretty sure I seen some of his pics when I was skimming through the site. This place is such a great resource, before I was doing it all along trial and error... Nice to read other people come across some of the similar problems I have encountered and what are some good solutions.
Re: Welcome SKACMAN!!!!
Hey Scott glad you made it. As soon as i saw your pond and Koi i knew you'd be right for the site. I don't know much myself about Koi although i have been asking some questions lately. I think i've been bitten by the Koi bug. Post lots of pictures, we like pics around here.

Re: Welcome SKACMAN!!!!
Hi Scott, yes I have a closed system pond and about 17 koi of which half are show quality. I just looked through you're pics and you've done a great job cleaning it up...but if that pond is open to natural water ways or lakes and looks to be, do not put any koi or GF in and if they are, remove them as soon as possible.
If the fry escape and they will, besides being illegal as can be, they destroy what ever natural body of water they invade.
Any questions about your fish just ask.

Re: Welcome SKACMAN!!!!
Thanks, the pond is naturally fed from the top of a hill, it just outflows at the other end into a big puddle, I plan to close it off and turn that into a pure Koi pond. Even if a fry makes it to the other side, I have screens up to prevent any fry or fish from exiting the property.
I am going to get some more pics up of my Koi I'd love your opinion on them when I do. Quick question though, where do you buy your koi? I am look for a particular type. A white & black pattern that looks familar to what a cow would have lol
Thanks Scott

Re: Welcome SKACMAN!!!!
I buy all my koi in the States. Please keep in mind that any koi that can be bought around here is a regular basic pond fish. It won't matter if the store calls it a regular koi or a AAA koi they are basicsly the same thing. All koi hobbyists have favourite fish and some of mine are what we call tateshita....
The Cow pattern would be either a Shiro Bekko or a Shiro Utsuri.........A Shiro Utsuri is probably what you looking for.
http://www.nishikigoiofniigata.com/list.php?type=Shiro-Utsuri
The Bekko is a solid coloured...white/shiro or red/aka or yellow/ki... fish with small black/sumi spots all above the lateral line..
The Utsuri is a black/sumi based fish that has white/shiro or red/hi or yellow/ki that is in a stepping stone pattern and will extend below the lateral line

Re: Welcome SKACMAN!!!!
BTW those screens better be extremely fine. The D of Fisheries and Natural resources will have a bird other wise...it is completely illegal to introduce non-native species to any natural water body........$$$$$$ big time..............Natural water systems and non-native fish do not go together.

They are, HRM and Environment know I put the fish in there and are completely fine with it. There is a 0% chance they would leave my property. You'd have to see how it is all is set up.
Re: Welcome SKACMAN!!!!
Oh and a Shiro Utsuri is exactly what I want, I'll have to see if I can't order 1 or 2 babies from somewhere. It is nice having a name to the "fin" if you will. At least now I know what to ask for rather then do you got a "cow koi" lol
I just googled Tateshita, they are beautiful I think I may actually have one. I really need to get some pics up of my Koi, perhaps you could help identify them as well. My favorite fish that I have is all white and he is 20-24 inches long:

There you go Matt, above is my favorite koi, too bad when you came over it was winter time. I'll have to get you out in the summer so you can have a good look at him.
Re: Welcome SKACMAN!!!!
Your white koi based on the pic is a Gin/metallic, shiro/white ,Matsuba/pine cone patterned koi.If there is not metallic sheen then it's just a Shiro Matsuba
That pale dark colour within the scales may or may not come up to give the fish a reticulated pine cone pattern. Unfortunately at 20''>24'' it's doubtful that it'll come up.
A plain white koi... a Shiro/white Muji/plain or one colour koi is a very boring fish with little to no value. I've given away Kohaku's (red/white) that lost thier Hi/red that had been worth close to $1k becauee they were plain white.
This link may help you ID some of your fish.the one at the top of the thread is a Showa black fish with white and red
